Working under supervision of the lead teacher, preschool teacher’s assistants carry out a variety of activities designed to help children gain a basic understanding of numbers, letters, colors, and shapes. Teachers aide’s play an instrumental role in supervising children on the playground, getting them ready for nap time, toileting, and serving meals. These are all important components of the preschool routine, which, if carried out appropriately, helps young children gain confidence in themselves and in their environment.

Without aides or assistants available to carry out key tasks, lead teachers might struggle to develop or execute lesson plans. This position is also important in that it provides young kids with yet another strong role model, as well as a great source of emotional support.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist the lead teacher in implementing daily lesson plans and activities that promote learning through designated curriculum and play.
  • Provide individualized attention and support to children, fostering their growth and development.
  • Help maintain a safe, clean, and engaging classroom environment.
  • Supervise and engage children during playtime and meal times.
  • Preparing children for and supervising them during nap time
  • Helping children use the bathroom or, when necessary, changing diapers.
  • Handling basic hygiene needs such as handwashing.
  • Assist in preparing materials and setting up learning stations for various activities.
  • Communicate effectively with children, parents, and staff to ensure a positive learning atmosphere.
  • Observe and document children’s progress, behavior, and needs, sharing insights with the lead teacher.
  • Support the implementation of health and safety protocols, ensuring a safe environment for all students.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience as a cook, preferably in a preschool, daycare, or similar setting.
  • Knowledge of child nutrition and food safety standards.
  • Ability to plan and prepare meals that appeal to young children.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Current food handler’s certification or willingness to obtain one prior to employment.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry heavy items and stand for extended periods.

Other Requirements

  • TB test and physical examination as required.
  • Mandated reporter certificate.
  • Obtain certifications in Pediatric First Aid and CPR within 6 months of employment.
  • Must participate in 20 clock hours per year of training through courses or workshops relating to early childhood education.
  • Submit to criminal history and background check.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or GED.

Must possess personal attributes needed to develop trusting relationships with children and adults. Such attributes include the following:

  • Interactions expressive of genuine warmth and concern for children as well as an understanding of their developmental needs.
  • Respect for children’s ideas, feelings, abilities and differences.
  • Insights into and tolerance for the range of age appropriate behavior.
  • Ability to assume needed duties and responsibilities without supervision.
  • Ability to use discretion in communications with parents in the Teacher ‘s absence.
  • Ability to move and react quickly and to handle emergencies effectively.
  • Ability to abide by all rules and regulations applicable to workers of the center.
  • Ability to accept changes in schedules, environment, etc…
  • Acquire knowledge of the current curriculum and implement the curriculum practices in the classroom.
